Government urged to make tracks for Felixstowe

[ September 30, 2016   //   ]

Network constraints are suppressing demand for freight services, says pressure group Freight on Rail. Every rail slot which comes available out of Felixstowe port can be filled immediately, it says, pointing out that there are currently there are 23 daily rail services in and out of the port which are removing around 1600 trucks from the A14 corridor each day. Once this corridor is fully upgraded 40 million lorry miles a year could be removed so it should be a priority scheme for the Government, it argues.
Freight on Rail manager Philippa Edmunds said that rail freight movement of consumer goods by rail has reached its highest traffic level since 1998, helping to counteract a decline in traditional traffics like coal.
