Buy now while stocks last – UPS orders 14 cargo jumbos

[ October 28, 2016   //   ]

UPS said on 27 October that it was buying 14 Boeing 747-8 Freighters, with an option to purchase an additional 14. The will be used by the express carrier to increase its capacity around the world.

While the UPS order follows a similar deal with Russian-owned Volga-Dnepr announced at this year’s Farnborough airshow, production of the type has been cut back lately. Many of the world’s passenger carriers have been dumping four-engined jumbos in favour of more economical twin-engined jets. Some analysts have predicted that the end is in sight for the iconic plane, a design which dates back to the late 1960s.

Nevertheless, says Boeing, the 747-8 Freighter is still the world’s most efficient freighter, giving the best economics of any large aircraft on the market. The Seattle-based plane maker also points out that the -8 version of the jumbo offers 16% more revenue cargo volume than its predecessor, the 747-400F and is also 30% quieter.
