Mega-Multimodal to explore mega-ships

[ February 28, 2017   //   ]

The impact of mega-ships and alliances on shippers, new regulations affecting container packing, and opportunities created by free trade zones will all be explored during this year’s Multimodal.

With the container industry building bigger ships to cut costs, and unparalleled consolidation within the industry through mergers and acquisitions, the shipping landscape is undergoing a period of change.

Secretary genera of the Global Shippers’ Forum, and director of global and European policy at the Freight Transport Association (FTA), Chris Welsh , will question whether the new world order is sustainable in a panel discussion on the 5th of April.

He will also explore the impact of a new European Union directive, which requires shippers moving ISO containers and swap bodies domestically and within the EU to make a “statement of weight” declaration.

“The state and cleanliness of the container, and how it is packed and secured, is of growing concern to the industry and regulators,” said Welsh.

“We will go through the Cargo Transport Units (CTU) Packing Code, and what shippers should do to ensure they are complying with the law.”

The shipping sessions are part of a three-day programme of workshops and discussions exploring the latest trends across the supply chain, as well as legislation affecting logistics decision makers.

Improving air cargo performance, modal switch, and the growing challenge of city logistics will also feature as part of the educational programme, put together in conjunction with the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT), the United Kingdom Warehousing Association (UKWA), and the Freight Transport Association (FTA).

Over 9,000 logistics leaders are expected to visit the industry’s leading supply chain exhibition for three days

“Multimodal continues to grow and provide a fantastic platform for logistics buyers and suppliers to meet and grow business,” said Robert Jervis, logistics portfolio director at Multimodal organiser, Clarion Events.

“This year’s programme looks at the issues affecting us all in the wake of Brexit, as well as exploring the latest trends.”
