Tachos for all heavy trucks, says European Parliament

[ July 5, 2012   //   ]

The European Parliament has called for all trucks over 2.8 tonnes to be fitted with ‘new generation’ tacographs between now and 2020, including retrofitting of lorries already being being sold in the EU. MEPs adopted a report by Romanian MEP Silvia-Adriana Ticau on July 3 in Strasbourg. New generation tachographs would use satellite technology to reduce the scope for fraud.

According to the report, new trucks should all be equipped by 2017 – 24 months after the entry into force of technical specifications expected to be adopted by the Commission in late 2014.

MEPs did however say that there should be an exemption for ‘own account’ vehicles operating within a 100km radius of their company base – one condition that transport is not the company’s main activity.
