FTA Ireland to host sustainable transport seminar

[ October 10, 2025   //   ]

FTA Ireland will host its annual Sustainable Transport Seminar on Wednesday 5 November 2025, uniting government, industry and academic leaders as they accelerate progress toward Ireland’s 2030 decarbonisation targets for transport.

Ireland’s Climate Action Plan sets an ambitious 50% reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the transport sector by 2030, compared with 2018 levels. This puts the focus firmly on both Government and industry to transition toward low- and zero-emission vehicles and supporting infrastructure. With just five years left to meet Ireland’s 2030 climate goals, transport operators face both challenge and opportunity — to decarbonise, reduce costs, and future-proof operations.

Despite this significant challenge, Ireland’s 2050 goal for the transport sector is net zero greenhouse gas emissions, according to FTA Ireland. But with such far-reaching and legally binding targets — and with operational costs continuing to rise — how can transport businesses deliver on these commitments while staying competitive?

With this challenge in mind, Minister of State Seán Canney TD has been confirmed as keynote speaker at FTA Ireland’s annual Sustainable Transport Seminar, taking place on Wednesday, 5 November at The Johnstown Estate, Enfield, Co Meath (about 30km west of Dublin on the M4). The event will bring together leading voices from government, industry, and academia to discuss practical pathways to sustainable logistics.

FTA Ireland’s chief executive, Niall Cotton, explains: “Decarbonisation remains the biggest challenge facing our industry. Achieving the Government’s targets will require collective action, investment, and practical guidance to help operators of all sizes transition to low- and zero-emission technologies. The Sustainable Transport Seminar provides a vital platform to exchange ideas, learn from real-world case studies, and identify the operational changes needed to future-proof our sector. Ireland’s logistics sector is resilient, forward-looking, and ready to adapt, added Cotton. Events like this ensure our members have the insights, partnerships, and policy alignment needed to make the transition to net zero a reality.”

In addition to the Minister’s address, the one-day agenda will feature expert briefings on Logistics Supply Chain Skills Group updates; Sustainability operations and decarbonisation; ECOdriving and influencing driver behaviour; and Road safety enforcement and risk management.

Sponsors of this year’s event include ENPROVA, Gas Networks Ireland, alongside other key industry partners.

The seminar will also mark the launch of FTA Ireland’s latest Manager’s Guide to Distribution Costs Report 2025. .

FTA Ireland’s recent initiatives — including its award-winning report Decarbonising the Road Freight Sector and collaboration with Coillte on a sectoral study into decarbonising forestry log haulage — underscore the association’s ongoing commitment to supporting members on their sustainability journey.

FTA Ireland is also celebrating 15 years in business. Throughout this time FTA Ireland has become a key voice in Irish freight and logistics. Since 2010, it has led industry standards in safety, compliance, and sustainability through initiatives like TruckSafe and Eco Driver Training. With strong government ties, it supports members via training, apprenticeships, and policy advocacy. FTA Ireland continues to drive innovation and professionalism across the transport sector.
