Caen-Ouistreham returns to the age of sail
[ October 24, 2025 // Chris Lewis ]Ports of Nomandy says that Caen-Ouistreham is to be used by VELA as the operations base for its cargo sail trimaran. It says that the innovative ship will showcase its efforts to create a more sustainable supply chain that respects the environment.
The port authority thanked Vela, co-founder by seafarer Francois Gabart, for its confidence in both itself and its operators. The new sailing vessel would mark an import event in the ecological transformation at Ports of Normandy which has for many years has been working to reduce its carbon footprint.
Testimony to this are the major infrastructure projects including the Cherbourg rail terminal, the continuing electrification of quays at Caen-Ouistreham, Cherbourg and Dieppe and the introduction of Brittany Ferries’ hybrid vessel Guillame to Normandie, all evidence of its drive to create a creaner, cleaner maritime supply chain.
The arrival of the VELA trimaran was further evidence of this progress and confirmed Caen-Ouistreham’s status as a pioneer port for an innovative and sustainable maritime industry.
