Customs carries out anti-nuke operation
[ November 7, 2025 // Chris Lewis ]Customs administrations from around the world have carried out the first ever operation to disrupt illegal trade in nuclear or radioactive materials. The World Customs Organization (WCO) said that Operation Stingray made 51 seizures in three weeks.
It was part of the global initiative led by the WCO’s Radiological and Nuclear Detection Awareness (RANDA) project, in partnership with the US National Nuclear Security Administration and with support from the International Atomic Energy Agency, Interpol and the WCO’s Regional Intelligence Liaison Offices.
Seizures included a containerload of radioactive clothing intercepted by Malta Customs in transit to Algeria while Angola Customs flagged a misdeclared air cargo shipment of Iridium-192 en route to Portugal.
Seizures of narcotics and other illicit goods, while not the focus of the operation, provided further insight into concealment methods and the value of strengthened detection capacity across all risk areas.
