Southampton school students get hands-on with shipping
[ November 20, 2025 // Chris Lewis ]Associated British Ports (ABP) recently welcomed more than 400 students from local schools and the New Forest to the Ocean Cruise Terminal in Southampton for a hands-on introduction to maritime and transport careers.
The event, managed by the Maritime and Transport Careers Programme (MTCP), brought together a wide range of organisations to showcase the exciting career paths and apprenticeship opportunities available.
Fifteen local organisations exhibited at the event, including ABP, DP World, Carnival UK, Red Funnel, Meachers Global Transport, Portsmouth International Port, Whitaker Tankers, SMS Towage, Portico, Ferry Speed, Solent Stevedores, and Williams Shipping. Students had the opportunity to speak directly with employers during a speed networking session, gaining insights into careers, apprenticeships, and graduate programmes.
Outside the terminal, students got hands-on experience with HGV cabs, the Tech Truck from Fareham College, and even boarded a Whitaker tanker vessel, offering a unique glimpse into the real-world operations of the sector.

MTCP engagement officer, Katie Bruce, said: “It’s fantastic to see so many students engaging with the sector and discovering the breadth of roles available. Events like this are vital in helping young people make informed decisions about their futures.”
ABP’s general manager of landside operations, Tom Dynes, added: “The enthusiasm from students and the dedication of our industry partners made it a really memorable day. MTCP and this careers day represent the first initiative of its kind in the UK, bringing private organisations together to connect with and motivate young people. We’re proud to be leading the way with MTCP. A big thank you to the ABP team for being on hand to provide extra support throughout the day, especially with the quayside activities.”
ABP Southampton has also launched a new educational outreach programme aimed at engaging local schools and colleges near the Port of Southampton and Solent Gateway to inspire the next generation to explore the careers available in the sector.
