Cranes lift DP World capacity in Romania
[ December 18, 2025 // Chris Lewis ]DP World has expanded its operations in Romania with the introduction of two new mobile harbour cranes and the completion of a 119,000sq m multimodal terminal platform at Constanta South Container Terminal. It significantly increases the port’s capacity at a time of growing demand of a strategic gateway between the Black Sea and mainland Europe.
DP World, which celebrated its 20th anniversary in Romania last year, has invested over €250 million invested in the country since 2004, including a new ro ro terminal, a project cargo facility in Constanta and an inland intermodal hub in Aiud.
Executive vice president for Eastern Europe, Kris Adamssaid: “This significant investment in the Port of Constanta demonstrates our commitment to supporting international trade in the face of evolving global challenges. By enhancing the Port’s capacity, we will not only alleviate congestion but also strengthen Constanta’s position as a regional logistics hub, enabling the terminal to operate at its full potential.”
The two mobile harbour cranes boost CSCT’s annual handling capability to 810,000 TEU or 280,000 tonnes a year. Their introduction comes at a critical time, with Constanta playing an expanded role in supporting European cargo flows following the disruption of Ukraine’s Black Sea ports. They are expected to cut waiting times by over 66% for grain, improve container vessel efficiency by around 20% and reduce fuel consumption and improve overall energy efficiency.
The new multimodal terminal platform transforms previously undeveloped land into a storage and handling zone for oversized cargo, project cargo and containerised goods, adding some 340,000 tonnes of annual capacity and removing a long-standing bottleneck at the port.
DP World says that companies are relocating their supply chains closer to European markets, especially in automotive and Romania and neighbouring countries are rapidly expanding production.
Both projects benefited from European Union co-financing.
