Freightliner intermodal becomes part of the CMA CGM family

CMA CGM has completed its acquisition of Freightliner’s intermodal operation. It adds the British rail company’s ten terminals, 1.4m rail slots, 2,000 wagons, and fleet of locomotives in the UK to the French-headquartered shipping and logistics operator’s portfolio.

Freightliner will remain a standalone intermodal service provider serving the UK market.

CMA CGM has nearly 7,200 employees across its maritime, logistics, and inland services in the UK while its shipping agency employs 286 staff and operates 28 services connecting the UK with the rest of the world.

CMA CGM Group, through its subsidiary CCIS, transported 200,000 TEUs by rail and road between January and July 2025. Its CEVA Logistics subsidiary employs 6,768 people across 103 sites with 718,000sq m of warehousing and consolidation capacity, along with 33,800 tonnes in air freight and 69,400 TEU of ocean freight.

Heavy Haul Rail, previously part of The Freightliner Group, will operate independently as a new company remaining under the current shareholder ownership, together with the European businesses, Rotterdam Rail Feeding and Freightliner PL and DE, which will continue to operate independently from Freightliner. It will focus solely on the bulk

freight market, moving 17 million tonnes of freight a year for customers in the industrial, energy and construction markets.

The company will operate 95 locomotives and over 1,000 wagons with a team of 950 people.
