Charging hubs for Tilbury and Hunterston
[ February 25, 2026 // Chris Lewis ]Fleete has officially opened the UK’s largest dedicated commercial vehicle electric charging hub at the Port of Tilbury. The 5MW facility features 16 ultra-rapid chargers for HGVs to charge simultaneously. It is the first of a network of shared commercial vehicle charging hubs to provide charging at strategic locations without the need for costly, time-consuming depot upgrades. Fleete’s new hub, delivered in partnership with the Port of Tilbury and Thames Freeport, is supported by £1 million from the UK government’s Thames Freeport Seed Capital Programme, with further funding provided by the Zero Emission HGV and Infrastructure Demonstrator (ZEHID) Programme, funded by the Department for Transport in partnership with Innovate UK.
Meanwhile, Greenwheel Electric, a new initiative by Muirhall Energy founder Chris Walker, has exchanged an options agreement with Peel Ports Group to pursue an application to build an electric vehicle charging hub at the Hunterston PARC (Port And Resource Campus) near Glasgow. The hub will provide low-cost, ultra-rapid charging from 100% renewable energy. Peel Ports Group has been granted planning permission for the £150m redevelopment of the site’s marine yard and plans to develop it to support offshore wind developments, alongside other potential uses.
