Fox news – British vulpine heads for a new life in the US

[ March 13, 2026   //   ]

A red fox has stowed away onto  a cargo ship in Southampton and sailed across the Atlantic to New York, where it is now in the care of the Bronx Zoo.

The zoo regularly works with officials to help rescue wildlife that has been illegally trafficked through nearby ports and airports though not so frequently, one imagines, animals that have sneaked aboard ships or aircraft of their volition

The fox was found on the vessel by port officials and brought to the Zoo on 19 February. Initial examinations indicate that it appears to be in good condition and, all being well, it would work with wildlife experts to find a long-term home.

British foxes are enterprising animals. Several years ago, one was find living happily at the top of Europe’s tallest building, the Shard, which was then under construction. It apparently was able to subsist quite happily hundreds of feed above ground on leftover sandwiches discarded by building workers.
