DHL signs rail deal with Russia, Kazakhstan and Belearus
[ March 28, 2014 // Chris ]DHL Global Forwarding is to form a new strategic partnership to develop rail services on the China-Europe route with United Transport and Logistics Company (UTLC). UTLC, which is expected to be established later in 2014, will be a joint-venture partnership between Russian Railways, Kazakhstan rail operator Temir Zholy and Belarusian Railway.
Steve Huang, CEO, DHL Global Forwarding China, who signed the memoarndum of understanding, said: “The potential for rail freight growth between Asia and Europe is huge but to grow it successfully requires high-level strategic partnerships such as the one we’ve established. We need services that are frequent, fast and reliable in terms of both delivery times and pricing.”
Under the deal, UTLC will provide all rail services in Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan and DHL third party logistics and door-to-door delivery, giving customers a one-stop, one price service.
Zhanar Rymzhanova, CEO, PO UTLC, who co-signed the MOU on behalf of three railways, saidthere would be a guaranteed train schedule with weekly departures.
The new MOU augments DHL Global Forwarding’s existing daily rail service from Shanghai, Tianjin or Qingdao along the trans-Siberian North corridor to Europe and the slightly faster West corridor, a weekly service using the Chengdu Express Train to DHL’s intermodal hubs in Małaszewicze and Lodz, Poland.
In January, DHL Global Forwarding introduced the first temperature-controlled China-Europe rail service.
