Annual Cycling Event Selects Sailors’ Society as Beneficiary

[ April 11, 2012   //   ]

Cycle Challenge has kindly named maritime charity the Sailors’ Society as the beneficiary of its annual Coast to Coast cycling challenge on 26th and 27th May. The two day cycle will take participants from Whitehaven, through the Northern Lakes and over the Pennines ending at Sunderland Marina.

In 2010 175 cyclists took part in the challenge and raised an incredible £20,000 for charity.

Mark Porter of said,

“We are delighted to be supporting this splendid charity and to help the unsung and unseen heroes of the ocean, the men whose lonely work keeps the world ticking over. It seems natural that a ride which links two great seafaring channels should look towards supporting the welfare of this brave and invisible multinational community, who daily risk their lives for us. We raised £20,000 for a previous beneficiary two years ago. Let ‘s set this as target for the 2012 C2C Challenge!”

The Sailors’ Society relies on donations from events such as this to help their Port Chaplains to provide much needed emotional and practical support to the world’s 1.2 million seafarers.
