Antwerp appointment makes port Brexit-ready

[ September 7, 2018   //   ]

Antwerp Port Authority has appointed a new representative for the UK and Ireland, as part of its preparations for Brexit. Based in Goxhill, Justin Atkin has more than 20 years of experience in transport, shipping and logistics and for the past two years has been owner of Ragged Edge Consulting which operates in the ports, transport and logistics sector.

The port has also set up a Brexit taskforce with representatives of the port community, Customs & Excise and the Federal Agency for the Safety of the Food Chain. A roadshow is also being planned early next year with among others a Port Day in Birmingham and a stakeholders’ meeting in London to help shippers find out more about the current range of services and connections in the port of Antwerp.

Antwerp Port Authority chief executive Jacques Vandermeiren said: “The actual impact of Brexit is still uncertain. Last year there was a decrease of nearly 8% in trade with the UK, probably due to this uncertainty. But with Brexit rapidly approaching we want to concentrate on maintaining and even expanding our market position within the United Kingdom.”
