Bandar Abbas rocked by port blast
[ April 27, 2025 // Chris Lewis ]A blast at the Iranian port of Shahid Rajaee port near Bandar Abbas was reported on 27 April to have killed at least 40 people, with more than 1,200 people injured according to state media. Firefighters were continuing to battle the fire although Iran’s Red Crescent Society was reported as saying that the fire was 90% extinguished and port activities had in fact resumed in unaffected parts of the port.
Media footage showed damaged and burning containers strewn over a wide area.
According to Associated Press, reports, UK security consultants Ambrey has claimned that the port has been handling imports of sodium perchlorate in March, a chemical used as a ballistic missile fuel.
The incident has similarities with the double explosion in the port of Beirut on 4 August 2020 that killed dozens of people and left many more injured and before that massive blast in the Chinese port of Tianjin on 12 August 2015, which left 173 dead and injured hundreds of others.
