Channel Tunnel yet to reach potential, say Lords

[ December 8, 2011   //   ]

The Channel Tunnel’s full potential is yet to be unlocked , according to a House of Lords report published on 8 December. The Internal Market, Energy and Transport EU Sub-Committee today, called on the EU to ensure the full implementation of the Railway Packages in all  Member States, to ensure fair access for all. The terms of Treaty of Canterbury that governed the Tunnel’s construction should also be reviewed to move towards direct governance of the Tunnel by the UK and French national regulators. Normal EU rail safety standards should apply in full in the Tunnel – it is not a unique safety case and does not require unique standards, said the Lords. Access charges should be reviewed and reduced, to ensure a better deal for operators and users, it added.
