CMA CGM supports wetlands projects
[ February 3, 2025 // Chris Lewis ]CMA CGM Group is supporting the regeneration of two important wetland nature reserves in the UK and Spain to mark World Wetlands Day on 2 February.
The first project, spanning three years, will restore the WWT Martin Mere, owned and managed by WWT, the charity for wetlands and wildlife, near the Group’s UK head office in Liverpool.
The site which attracts 200,000 visitors each year, needs significant work to remove overgrown vegetation, to improve the water quality and boost flood resilience by replacing sluices and weirs.
The second two-year project is near the Group’s Valencia office in Spain in the Albufera Natural Park, working with a Spanish NGO, Fundación Global Nature (FGN) to restore a wetland which is hugely important for migrating birds. The Tancat de la Ratlla was badly damaged by the devastating storms at the end of 2024.
Regional director CMA CGM Group Europe, John Blessington, said: “Martin Mere is known to many staff in our UK head office in Liverpool. They have fond memories of school trips there and are already looking forward to volunteering to support WWT’s work on the site. Restored, Martin Mere has enormous potential to excite, inspire and educate people – of all ages and abilities from all over the region – about climate change and the critical importance of sites like this for biodiversity and habitat preservation. Similarly, in Spain as part of the Tancat de la Ratlla restoration project, our staff will be helping FGN with their monitoring campaigns to learn more about overwintering migratory birds and ensure these species are better protected.”
