Consortium wins bid for German river port

[ August 31, 2023   //   ]

A consortium comprising the Contargo container hinterland logistics network, SFI and the Ziegler Group has won a bid to operate a new bimodal container terminal in Straubing-Sand on the river Danube in south-east Germany.

Construction on the 50,000sq m site has already started  and operation is planned to start in the second quarter of 2025. Up to ten trains per week will call at the new terminal, which will create up to 20 jobs.

Managing Director of Ziegler Holding, Andreas Sandner, said: “The location in the port of Straubing-Sand makes the rail connection very interesting. Goods produced outside Germany find their way into local commerce via the seaports. Our aim is to network the region not only with the big seaports in Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium, but also with the ports on the Adriatic. This will give shippers more flexibility.”

The location will offer space for the storage of up to 1,000teu and expansion would be possible into adjacent areas. Contargo can also provide support at its 24 terminals.
