Containers down but ro ro holds steady at Antwerp-Bruges

Geopolitical tensions and slowing global economic growth contributed to a 5.5% fall in traffic to 271m tonnes at the port of Antwerp-Bruges in 2023. However, the twin Belgian gateway said that its container segment share had increased compared to the other ports in the Hamburg – Le Havre range. Tonnage in containers was down 5.9% in tonnes and there was a 7.2% fall in TEUs, but Antwerp-Bruges’ market share rose 0.6% points to 30.2% in 2023.

Ro ro traffic also held up relatively well with a decrease of 2.1%. New cars rose 9.0% to 3.56 million while unaccompanied cargo (excluding containers) on ro ro vessels was down by -1.5%. Ro ro traffic to and from the UK was down -4.9% but traffic with Ireland was up +17.9%), while Scandinavia traffic is holding up.
