‘Dawn raids’ target European rail operators

[ June 24, 2013   //   ]

The European Commission said on 19 June that it had carried out unannounced inspections at the premises of companies involved in rail freight to South-East Europe, in several member states. In a move reminiscent of the ‘dawn raids’ against container shipping companies suspected of cartel-like practices, it said that it suspected the companies of infringing EU rules that prohibit practices like price fixing and customer allocation. The Commission did not disclose the names or the number of companies concerned, but said its inspections focused on block trains operators who also operate as shipping agents.
