DB Schenker to operate world’s first electric container ship

DB Schenker is to operate a fully-electric coastal container feeder vessel in Norway, the first of its kind in the world. 

The forwarder has signed a pre-study agreement with furniture giant Ekornes and the vessel designer Naval Dynamics, along with energy tech firm Kongsberg and autonomous vessel company Massterly.

The 50m long vessel will be able to carry 300 deadweight tons of cargo vessel will will operate between Ekornes’ own port, Ikornnes, and the port of Ålesund, It will complete the 43km (23 nautical mile) voyage within three hours, at a speed of 7.7 knots. It will run without a crew but will be monitored and controlled by staff at Massterly’s Remote Operation Center (ROC), whose team members include certified navigators and naval engineers.
