Dock safety downgrade is ‘recipe for disaster’

The Unite trade union has strongly criticised government plans to scrap the Docks Regulations that govern health and safety in ports in favour of self-regulation, as part of its ‘Red Tape Challenge. It adds that since it downgraded health and safety in docks to ‘low risk’ in October last year, the fatal accident rate in UK docks has increased to five times the national average with eight deaths in the following three months.
