DP World to deploy Boxbay superstack system in London Gateway

[ October 23, 2025   //   ]

DP World is to introduce its Boxbay high bay empty container storage (HBS) system at London Gateway. Developed by a joint venture between DP World and Germany’s SMS group, the technology stores 20- and 40-foot containers up to 16 tiers high using automated electric stacker cranes. The system has already been tested at DP World’s Jebel Ali Port in Dubai, where nearly 500,000 TEU were handled using the technology.

The £170 million London Gateway installation at Berth 4 will be capable of holding up to 27,000 TEU and is expected to take just over two years to complete. DP World says it will lead to dramatic improvement in yard capacity, safety and efficiency – operating like a giant vending machine for containers.

The modular Empty Superstack system requires no changes to landside or seaside interfaces and, by removing tiers of empty containers from the automated stacking crane (ASC) yard, reduces rehandling, allowing ASCs to operate more efficiently and improving performance across the quay.
