EU signs IT accord with Japan

[ June 12, 2015   //   ]

Customs officials from the EU and Japan took an important step towards the creation of an IT system for mutual recognition of Authorised Economic Operators (AEOs) at a Joint Customs Cooperation Committee on 10 June. The EU and Japan have mutually recognised their respective ‘trusted trader’ programmes in respect of security requirements in 2010, and the Mutual Recognition Agreement has been fully implemented since 2011. But digitalisation of customs procedures is crucial in order to ensure that these programmes function properly and effectively.
They also agreed to strengthen cooperation between their customs authorities to identify and mitigate threats which may affect international trade routes, as well as to explore new mechanisms, such as accelerated trade lanes, to support exporters.
