Felixstowe digs deep for bigger ships

[ October 4, 2023   //   ]

The Port of Felixstowe has completed a deepening programme for its main approach channel and berths 8 and 9 to improve access for the world’s largest container ships.

The event was marked by the maiden call at the port of its namesake OOCL Felixstowe, the latest in a series of 24,188teu mega container vessels operated by the line.

The approach channel has been deepened from 14.5 metres to 16 metres and berths 8 and 9 increased from 16 metres to 18 metres below chart datum.

The port’s chief operating officer Robert Ashton said that the dredge would not only increase the maximum size of vessel that Felixstowe can handle but also berthing windows for the biggest vessels that can enter or leave the port on each high tide.

Berths 6 and 7 were upgraded in 2022 to provide four berths capable of handling vessels of over 20,000 TEU capacity.
