Fired with enthusiasm

[ December 10, 2021   //   ]

Portsmouth stevedore Portico is helping local firefighter Storms Menri raise funds to buy gear for his underequipped colleagues in Ghana. It is covering all customs clearance and shipping costs for a container full of protective gear.

During a recent trip to the country, Storms saw for himself how hard local fire personnel work to protect their communities with only limited access to protective equipment such as fire-proof tunics, trousers, helmets, gloves and boots and a video of firefighters turning up to a major fire incident in a taxi, armed with just a couple of fire extinguishers (Ghana Fire Service Personnel Arrive in Taxi to Fight ‘Dead’ Fire at Begoro – YouTube) inspired him to help, teaming up with the Fireaid charity.

As part of his fundraising efforts, he completed a 10 mile run each day around the Isle of Wight. He also ran 5km at Southsea parkrun alongside Portico key account manager, Matt Green, and also took part in the the Great South Run –  both of them in full firefighting gear.

Matt Green said: “After joining him for Southsea parkrun in his full firefighting kit, I’ve seen first-hand his determination to raise the funds needed, and can only imagine the challenge he faced repeating it for the Great South Run.”

Storms Menri added: “The kit will improve the operational capability of the Ghana National Fire and Rescue Service and  save more lives. We appreciate the amazing support from Portico.”
