Flat figures for Port of London

[ March 10, 2014   //   ]

Cargo handled on the tidal Thames in 2013 was marginally down by 1.2% (0.5 million tonnes) at 43.2 million tonnes, according to the Port of London Authority’s latest figures.

The PLA, which oversees shipping movements in and out of port terminals on the Thames, says the main reason for the fall was the closure of Coryton oil refinery in May 2012. But the loss of crude oil trade in 2013 was offset by increases in the throughput of other cargoes, principally aggregates for building, construction and civil engineering projects.

Containers and trailers were at 15.1 million tonnes compared with 14.8 million tonnes in 2012.
