Forth Ports is supplier of choice to Glasgow games

[ October 21, 2013   //   ]

Forth Ports has been named as the official Supplier of Port Services for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. It will supply 350 40ft shipping containers to pack and store equipment purchased from London 2012 Organisers, LOCOG for use in the Glasgow 2014 Athletes Villages including beds, tables and lamps, as well as a selection of sports equipment.

Forth Ports has also already shipped all 350 containers from their previous location in The Port of Tilbury on the Thames to The Port of Grangemouth, where they are now kept in secure storage until they are required for the Games.

The transportation method meets the Glasgow 2014 sustainability targets, with transportation by sea more than five times more economical than by road and twice as environmentally friendly as by rail.

Glasgow 2014 deputy chief executive Ty Speer described the transport operation as “an important step on our journey to the Games. We take our sustainability targets very seriously and after considering all options available to us, bringing the containers to Scotland by sea was the most cost-effective and environmentally-friendly approach.”
