Freight industry seeks rapid return of air capacity

[ March 1, 2021   //   ]

Passenger flights and their bellyhold cargo capacity must be quickly restored once it is safe to do so, said Logistics UK at a webinar on 24 February. Attendees were told that air cargo has played a vital role in supporting the UK throughout the pandemic, but its long-term value to the economy is dependent on capacity recovery and innovative solutions to efficiency.

Logistics UK’s multi modal policy manager, Zoe McLernon said that participants at the event “were positive about the future of air freight but remain concerned about the timelines for a return to normal flight patterns and progressing important innovation and research work.”

Cargo-only movements increased significantly during the pandemic with slot waivers allowing freighters more access to airports which allowed the sector to continue servicing the nation and was crucial to fighting the pandemic by transporting PPE, pharmaceuticals and vaccines, along with an increase in e-commerce.
