French-Far East alliance set to shape up shipping

[ February 24, 2016   //   ]

Shipping analysts Alphaliner claim that CMA CGM is orchestrating a ‘super-alliance’, CCEO, that would also include COSCO (presumably the enlarged COSCOCS), Evergreen and OOCL. Alphaliner suggest that CCEO would have a combined vessel capacity of 2.5 to 3m teu, well ahead of the G6’s current 1.7m teu.

CCEO would also be in a position to match the 2M alliance between MSC and Maersk.

If confirmed, the creation of CCEO could seriously weaken the remaining shipping alliances. The CKYHE alliance, which once boasted five members – COSCO, K Line, Yang Ming, Hanjin and Evergreen – would be seriously depleted. The G6 could potentially be weakened by the departure of NOL/APL which has been bought by CMA CGM, though NOL/APL is officially remaining a G6 member for the time being.

With the loss of China Shipping to the merger with COSCO, Dubai-based UASC is now effectively the sole member of the Ocean3 grouping.
