From Lufty with love

Lufthansa Cargo flights are currently moving over 30 million Valentine roses or the equivalent of 13 full MD-11 freighter loads from South America and Africa to Europe in time for Valentine’s Day. Kenyan flowers are picked in the morning and transported immediately to Nairobi, the Kenyan capital, continuing the journey overnight to Frankfurt on board a Lufthansa Cargo freighter with the briefest of stopovers. The roses are shipped out by road or flown on to other destinations across Europe within hours of shutdown.

The airline also claims that roses grown in a tropical climate and imported by air are more environmentally-friendly than roses cultivated in Europe with artificial irrigation and heated greenhouses, which generate more carbon emissions.
