Guidelines for Calcium Hypochlorite

[ May 9, 2016   //   ]

The Cargo Incident Notification System (CINS) and the International Group of P&I Clubs have published new Guidelines for the transport of Calcium Hypochlorite in containers. The product is marketed widely as chlorine powder or bleach powder, has been implicated in an apparent upsurge in container fires, leading to some lines imposing very strict precautions or even outright bans.

The practices are also intended to give carriers the confidence to accept the commodity for shipment.

Recent incident investigations also suggest that, in the vast majority of cases, Calcium Hypochlorite has been mis-declared by shippers.

Key recommendations of the guidelines are the use of plastic drums with adequate air circulation, a package limit of 45kg net weight and a 14-tonne limit on the maximum payload per container.
