Hamburg holds its own

[ February 27, 2024   //   ]

The port of Hamburg said that geopolitical and economic challenges weighed on throughput in 2023. The decline in the German economy led to a decline in container throughput compared to the previous year, but there was a slight recovery in the second half of the year.

Total cargo handled was 114.3 million tonnes down 4.7% on the previous year. Container throughput was 7.7 million TEU, down  6.9%. Bulk cargo remained largely stable.

The port added that, compared to its Northern European competitors, the decline in containers was less pronounced in Hamburg.
