Hopeful signs for Boulgne-Calais, good year for Eurotunnel

[ January 13, 2017   //   ]

Boulogne Calais port said that a good fourth quarter in 2016 had brought hope in an otherwise difficult year in 2016. Truck traffic suffered from the presence of migrants around the port up until October and the port lost some market share as it only managed to grow its freight traffic by 3.38% to 1.91 million while the market grew overall by 6% in 2016.

However, activity at commercial terminals in Boulogne and Calais was stimulated by Calais Port 2015 construction, the programme to upgrade the port and add new large ferry berths. A total volume of 1.2m tonnes was handled while Boulogne had 0.61m tonnes.

Despite a drop of 6,2% of its volume, the port of Boulogne remained France’s number one fishing port in 2016 with 33,628 tonnes.

The main winner in 2016 was the Eurotunnel shuttle service, which record an 11% rise in traffic to an all-time record of 1,641,638 vehicles transported.
