ITAL goes direct to the Rock

[ March 4, 2024   //   ]

Ital logistics has added direct weekly road freight groupage services to Gibraltar to its pan-European network in partnership with local freight forwarder Eastgate Express Services.

The largest logistics company on the Rock, founded in 1997, Eastgate specialises in UK overland transport, as well as offering storage, customs clearance, courier and express and removals services.

ITAL Logistics development director, James Mears, said: “We have been exporting to Gibraltar for many years on the back of our southern Spanish loads, with Eastgate providing us with local distribution services. We are delighted to have entered into an official partnership agreement with Eastgate, bringing their resources and wealth of experience in this niche market.”

“Moreover, transit times are reduced as our departures will now go directly to Gibraltar as opposed to dropping off freight en route.

“Like ourselves, Eastgate has focused itself on long-term customer relationships and to provide the best possible level of services. With their long list of clients, and our appetite for development, we are confident that we will increase the number of weekly departures.”

With only a small manufacturing sector accounting for around 2% of its economy relating to exports, Gibraltar relies heavily on imports with a substantial amount of these coming from the UK.

Mears added: “Gibraltar is a complex market. Being outside of the European Union, even before Brexit there were customs formalities. Additionally there are very precise processes, particularly surrounding shipments for the Ministry of defence and other official bodies. Eastgate is directly linked with the Asycuda Gibraltar Customs system which helps to facilitate a trouble free and smooth operation.

“There is also a weight limit of 22,500kg maximum payload, although a high proportion of deliveries are in small streets requiring smaller vehicles fitted with Moffett forklift trucks.”
