K Line takes long view of bio-LNG
[ April 7, 2026 // Chris Lewis ]Japan’s K Line has signed an agreement for the long-term procurement of carbon-neutral bio-LNG fuel (liquefied bio methane, LBM) and it has started to use the fuel in its car carriers.
The agreement is expected to reduce its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by around 60,800 tons per year.
Bio-LNG fuel is an alternative to liquefied natural gas (LNG) that is produced from livestock excrement, food residue and other organic waste. With lower emissions than traditional fuels, it can be used as-is in existing LNG-fuelled vessels, and will be used in K Line’s existing LNG-fuelled car carriers.
The bio-LNG it is now using is ISCC-EU certified, ensuring a degree of sustainability in compliance with the European Union’s Renewable Energy Directive (RED).
In its Environmental Vision 2050 – Blue Seas for the Future, K Line has set a net-zero GHG emissions target by that date and in the continuous use of bio-LNG is one of its key initiatives to achieve this.
