Kaalbye Shipping refutes Syria claim

[ March 28, 2014   //   ]

Kaalbye Shipping International has refuted reports by Washington-based think tank C4ADS and in the Washington Post that it had illegally shipped cargo to Syria and deliberately disabled ship transponder systems. The company, which operates a fleet of eight general cargo, ro ro and container vessels of around 8,000dwt, said that it had been vindicated by a correction in the 6 February Washington Post which stated the publication “incorrectly described details about the operation of a Ukrainian cargo vessel highlighted in a feature about military aid to Syria.” However, C4ADS itself has not issued any correction to date, it says. The original C4ADS report falsely alleged that Kaalbye disengaged the transponder system during the Ocean Fortune’s 2013 voyage through the eastern Mediterranean Sea and that the Kaalbye-operated ship made stops at Syrian ports during the journey.
