Kent to ban overnight truckers

[ December 14, 2020   //   ]

Logistics UK has reacted angrily to plans by the Department for Transport and Kent Country Council to temporarily ban lorry drivers from taking all rest periods other than the 45mins break in seven Kent boroughs.

Policy Manager for the South, Heidi Skinner, said they had failed to consider their welfare and rest periods were required to meet their legal obligations under the drivers’ hours regulation.  Giving only 12 working days’ notice of the ban – enforceable by £150 fine from 1 January 2021 – is also unacceptable, she said.

Almost all lorry parks in the surrounding area are at critical levels of utilisation and neither DfT nor KCC have  provided any solution to the lack of space.
