Longer trains for Southampton port

[ June 22, 2018   //   ]

The Campaign for Better Transport has welcomed granting of planning permission at Redbridge, Southampton, for freight sidings to allow longer freight trains to and from the port.

It says that it would boost capacity on the existing 20 daily freight trains by 45% as part of a wider scheme to allow 775 metre trains out of Southampton port.

Philippa Edmunds, Freight on Rail Manager, said: “The longer trains can remove an extra 200,000 HGVs each year from local roads and the whole A34 corridor to the Midlands and the North.”
