Maersk box ship goes over the top

[ September 18, 2018   //   ]

The ice-strengthened Seago Line Venta Maersk has become the first containership to navigate the North East passage above Russia from Asia to Europe on 1 September.

The seas north of Russia are still covered by heavy ice in winter but with more extensive ice melt in summer – thanks to global warming – experts suggest that regular container services may become possible during the warmer months of the year.

The route is substantially shorter than via the south of India and the Suez canal.

Venta Maersk is one of seven ice-strengthened 3,600teu vessels that Maersk is currently having built in China and are among the largest ice-strengthened container ships ever built.
