Maersk brings order to ‘customs chaos’
[ June 25, 2025 // Chris Lewis ]Maersk has launched a “Trade & Tariff Studio” to help cargo owners to regain control in an increasingly volatile trade environment. As global trade faces rising duties, regulatory scrutiny, and disrupted clearance processes, Maersk says its new platform offers a centralized, AI-powered approach to customs and tariff management.
Global head of trade and customs consulting, Lars Karlsson, said that newly imposed and then suddenly postponed tariffs were creating chaos.
Maersk aims to bring clarity to global supply chains when goods are crossing borders.
After comprehensive pilots with large customers, the solution will be available from 2
June for cargo imported into the US with full roll out to the rest of the world scheduled for August. The product is best used by cargo owners as part of their integrated logistics services by Maersk but can also be implemented as a stand-alone solution.
Many companies rely on multiple local customs brokers, resulting in fragmented data, limited visibility, and unnecessarily paid duties.
Maersk says its data shows that 5-6% of tariffs are overpaid on average due to lack of centralized data, that 20% of shipment delays are caused by poor customs preparation and that only 50-55% of trade eligible for existing Free Trade Agreements actually take advantage of them. More than 650 FTAs exist, but they are complex and companies often don’t have the resources to fully understand all applicable details at origin and destination
The Studio is a global customs platform that combines AI-powered tariff engineering and optimization, ensuring the correct application of over 6,000 product codes and over 20,000 sub-codes.
It also offers upstream compliance risk screening, helping customers avoid delays, detentions, and penalties, along with real time updates from data partners, as well as Maersk’s 2,700 customs experts across the globe.

The platform also allows integration of trusted local brokers while still ensuring a global overview.
It also helps companies comply with the growing number of complex regulations for product safety and labour standards and upcoming environmental mandates such as the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism and deforestation regulations.
“Customs declaration is one of the most complex areas in global logistics,” says Karlsson. “With Maersk Trade & Tariff Studio, we are not only simplifying that complexity, we are turning it into a competitive advantage for our customers.”
