MSC ship ablaze in mid-Atlantic

A seaman has died and another is missing after the 6732teu MSC Flaminia caught fire in the middle of the Atlantic. The 11-year-old chartered vessel was on MSC’s voyage number 1225R and had departed Charleston on 7 July and was due in Antwerp on 17 July. She was due to call in Felixstowe on 19 July, according to MSC’s schedules.

The tanker DS Crown changed course and recovered 24 persons from a lifeboat and a life raft and another MSC ship, the 6,402teu MSC Stella diverted to pick up four injured crew members from the tanker. The injured seamen were subsequently flown by helicopter to the Azores and the other crew are due to arrive in Falmouth in the UK on the DS Crown. The fire is reported to have begun in one of the 2,876 containers that the ship was carrying.
