New group to push Sheffield logistics hub

[ June 26, 2016   //   ]

Logistics companies from across the Sheffield City Region (SCR) gathered at a meeting organised on 22 June by Logistics Hub UK (LHUK) to discuss ‘Building the SCR’s Logistics Hub’.

The private-public sector group currently has a core group of members including Peel group, Doncaster Sheffield Airport, rail port developer Verdion, Harworth Estates, Eldred Group, Shepherd Distribution and Anglo World Cargo. Other strategic include Doncaster council, the local enterprise partnership, Barnsley College, Doncaster College and the University of Sheffield Management School.

Rob Bell, from logistics consultancy Archomai, addressed the gathering, saying that the region was “one of the most exciting prospects in the country…The strength of your offer as a region is the strength of your supply chain.

“We need to start seeing the North as an interconnected gateway and focus on trade corridors and our multi model offer.

“It is an exciting time for the logistics industry and the region is making huge progress in its connectivity. There is much to do and more effort to raise the profile is needed.”

Attendees also heard from Gary Winterman from Doncaster Sheffield Airport handler Anglo World Cargo who talked about the increase in cargo going through the airport year on year.

Steve Swann, who is leading on the LHUK project, said: “We were delighted that businesses from across the Sheffield City Region were able to join us for this first in a series of important events bringing together the region’s logistic companies.

“The clear message from both of our keynote speakers was that logistics is a growing business area which is of huge importance for our region.

“Logistics is a vital sector for any region and we really need to start to shout about what we have in the Sheffield City Region. Our logistics businesses and super connectivity really does make us stand out from the crowd.”
