New guidelines for Lithium batteries

[ March 29, 2023   //   ]

A group of freight industry bodies including insurers the TT Club, the Cargo Incident Notification System Network (CINS) and cargo handling organisation ICHCA have produced a series of guidelines for safe transport of Lithium-ion batteries in containers. Lithium-ion Batteries in Containers Guidelines (101.A) is intended as the first of a series of publications. It provides a general overview, and will be followed by three further documents – regulatory compliance check-lists, risk assessmentand emergency response, and training and educational awareness.

TT Club risk management director, Peregrine Storrs-Fox, said:  “As the pressure on all forms of economic activity for decarbonisation increases, the use of these batteries will inevitably escalate at rates we have previously not experienced.” Air transport has been heavily restricted already and it is clear that surface modes will be called upon to transport these goods and operators needed to be aware of the safety issues and ensure that risks are properly managed.”
