Finnish-based Nurminen Logistics has operated the first full-length container train on the new southern Trans-Caspian route from Chongqing, China. via Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Romania to Central Europe, avoiding Russia.

Nurminen Logistics says it created the route in two months from scratch together with the Kazakh railways. The Trans-Caspian route combines rail and sea transport and is three times faster than the sea-only route, it adds.

Nurminen says the first train is full and the next, which leaves on 25 May, is almost sold out. Weekly departures are scheduled to begin in June.
