Palletways partners deliver Winter Olympics security
[ March 11, 2026 // Chris Lewis ]Palletways UK and Palletways Europe members; UK-based Transvalair and Italy’s Sogedim teamed up to deliver and positioning all the security scanning equipment for the Winter Olympics in northern Italy.
Transvalair, based near Gatwick, was appointed in late 2025 as the freight forwarder for the event and all its security elements., liaising with logistics and security organisers and Rapiscan Systems, which provided and installed security screening systems.
Transvalair shipped and delivered the X-ray and scanning equipment which the Rapiscan team built on site to provide airport equivalent security at each location, including the Milano San Siro Stadium.
Transvalair operations director Peter Alfred, said: “After the Rapiscan equipment was shipped from Malaysia to Rotterdam, we transported it by road to Italy. But we needed a local base before everything was delivered to the various venues across Italy, including to six event villages in the Alps.
“That’s where the strength of the Palletways network came into play. We collaborated with Valentin Dima, chief operating officer of Italian member Sogedim, who agreed to provide 30,000sq.ft of warehouse space in Milan which became our local base. From there, the materials were delivered by road on time and in perfect condition to the Rapiscan team for installation.”
More than 35 sea containers were shipped from Malaysia and delivered to Milan, equating to 40 articulated lorry loads of equipment which Rapiscan made operational by the end of January with real-time monitoring of every piece of equipment.
Craig Chitty of Rapiscan, commented: “This is event logistics on a massive scale, working within a critical time frame and with the added pressure of the unique demands of the event locations. Having worked with Transvalair before, we were confident everything would come together, and through their meticulous planning and hands on involvement from senior members of the Transvalair and Sogedim team, it did.”
