Peel Ports Group urges mariners: make yourself heard on Jubilee Day

[ May 31, 2022   //   ]

Peel Ports Group has pledged its support for a national shipping salute to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

The initiative, organised by the UK Chamber of Shipping and supported by the Department for Transport and UK Major Ports Group, will see ports across the Country encourage vessels in their harbour to sound a long blast on their horn or whistle, at 12 noon on Saturday 4 June.

Peel Ports is asking mariners to create a fanfare of celebration from vessels at Liverpool, London Medway, Heysham, Great Yarmouth, Clydeport and Dublin.

A special fleet of 100 vessels will sail the River Medway, where Peel is the statutory harbour authority, as part of a four-hour jubilee event, in which the ports group is delighted to support in its role as Statutory Harbour Authority.

Peel Ports Group chief executive Claudio Veritiero, said: “We’re a proud maritime nation and all of our ports across the group are steeped in history, having been part of many generations of Royal celebrations. The maritime community in particular is deeply bound up in all that’s happened across Queen Elizabeth’s reign.

“The sound of vessels at midday on the 4th is going to be truly unique occasion that will be remembered for a long time.”
