Peel to build a million square feet of warehousing
[ October 7, 2026 // Chris Lewis ]Peel Ports Group says it will create over a million square feet of additional Grade A warehousing capacity across its network to help combat a potential national shortage of stock.
The phased programme will focus primarily on the Port of Liverpool with a new 900,000sq ft warehouse and upgrades to existing facilities. It will also develop an additional 100,000sq ft facility at King George V Dock in Glasgow.
Over the last 15 years, the company says it has developed more than 1.6 million square feet of Grade A warehousing including in Liverpool and London Medwayfor steel, metals, bulks and other commodities.
It quotes a July report by estate agent Savills which says that there is increasing demand for larger warehousing across the country and that the country could be facing a major shortage.
Peel adds that businesses are reviewing their supply chain strategies in response to changing global trade patterns with more seeking port-centric warehousing to reduce transport costs and improve efficiency. Demand is being driven by a number of strategically important sectors, including fertiliser, chemicals, defence, manufacturing and other bulk commodity markets.
Peel’s chief operating officer for ports and marine, David Huck, said: “Our customers are increasingly looking for high-quality storage space located close to our network of ports, and demand continues to grow across a number of critical industries. While economic conditions remain challenging, the strength of demand, particularly in Liverpool and across the wider North of England and West Coast of Scotland, gives us confidence to make this significant investment.
“Having warehousing located close to the quayside enables customers to streamline operations, reduce transport movements, improve speed to market and enhance supply chain resilience. In a world where every pound, every day and every decision matters, that creates a significant competitive advantage.”
