Rhenus rethinks the groupage network

[ January 8, 2024   //   ]

Rhenus Road Freight is updating its European groupage freight system. Groupage Network 2.0 will offer daily cross-border services, which include all of the company’s European branches, and will cut transit times and boost reliability in the long term, says the German-owned forwarder.

It has now strengthened the first routes in European countries – and particularly in Germany – during a pilot phase, before the solution is rolled out to include all cross-border services in Europe at the turn of the year.

Groupage Network 2.0 covers all Rhenus Road Freight national organisations on the continent. Rhenus has set itself the goal of transporting a much larger proportion of consignments in a significantly shorter time with maximum reliability. Country organisations have been working on the new structure for more than two years.

It says that until now, daily scheduled departures have only been common in highly industrialised centres whereas in other regions it only offered twice-weekly departures.

However, it will now connect all European regions daily through its Groupage Network 2.0 system. A new hub structure in various countries will allow imports and exports to bre processed daily with shipments making their way to the relevant country gateway from where they will move to a central European hub at Hilden, in North Rhine-Westphalia.

Managing director of Rhenus Road Freight, Carsten Hölzer, explained: We’ve selected Hilden as the strategically and geographically suitable centre to act as the pan-European transhipment point after using a centre-of-gravity analysis. We can provide short distances and efficient main services, pick-up runs and final deliveries here.”

The new structure is designed to eliminate ‘blank areas’ where customers have to accept longer transit times, with times reduced by about a third on average.

Customers also gain access to local warehousing capacity close, giving a more flexible solution.
